Wedding Vendors Reviewing Sites

Reviewing sites are for the benefit of future brides and vendors, used by newlyweds mainly to write about the job well done or settle disputes with their vendors. Some of the sites with reviewing options are more quality controlled than others. Most of the sites are open for abuse by vendors and customers by using fake reviews and unfair reviews, most of the sites benefit their member paying vendors with annual fees of more than $500 that includes leads and other options on their site or free for limited exposure. All are free for the brides.

The following are the most used review sites with Pablo's comments:

BBB Better Business Bureaus http://www.sanantonio.bbb.org A lot of complaints for non members. This site helps the newly married by offering dispute resolution services. Expensive membership for vendor and free for brides research.
Google Maps: for example, Local business results for weddings flowers near San Antonio, TX : Great source. Based on relevant serch results wich is very difficult, the best is not always the first.
Yellowpages.com or superpages.com : Too crowded with non relevant or quality wedding vendors. However, many reviews to see.
Decidio.com : Reviewing is low, needs more reviews.
Weddingsolutions.com : Too crowded, difficult to navigate.
Wedding Wire http://www.weddingwire.com/ : Is the most advanced and friendly planner site. Be careful with reviewers without a profile and similar comments for the same vendor with the same writing style, or only one vendor review on the reviewer profile. The best reviewers usually rate most of their vendors.

As bride, groom or planner, it's your option to find out if your prospective vendor is a negative force in this market. Dont be the boy who cried wolf, knowledge is power.

Pablo's 2008/9 Wedding Trends Review

While weddings have not changed much over the years, there are always some noticeable trends that come into play. Everyone wants to do something a little bit different, which introduces an element of individuality to their wedding ceremony. Some of this year's biggest trends have to do with the creative use of color in attire and in flowers.

Personal Wedding Videos: More will be posted on youtube and wedding blogs.
Food and Drinks: Presentation is a bit like fashion. The traditional martini bars, lavish buffets and pretentious food selections are out. Hors d'Oeuvre "shooters" in cylinder glasses (Tall, sleeks, cylinder shaped glasses or shot glasses). Passing small Hors d'Oeuvre plates to guests is "in". Wine: a mayor focus for future weddings; wines from California, Chile, Argentina and Australia are must-haves. The signature drinks such as the Mojito--thanks to the popularity of Latin cuisine, the Mojito remains an "in" cocktail. Non-alcoholic drinks such as flavored waters, gourmet coffees, designer teas and fruit smoothies are in.
Disposable Cameras vs. Low price SLR: Disposables somehow diminish the quality of the event. If anybody in your family owns a Nikon D40 or 60, he or she will be a great complement in addition to your photographer, any digital camera will help, some of the cell phone cameras are better than the disposable camera.
Hybrid Bands: For example, not all the live bands and DJ's can handle different types of music such as rock, 70's, 80's, hip-hop, soul, cumbia & salsa. However, some do. Also, some include MCs and wireless microphones. Also, any DJ should be able to play from any MP3 source such an IPOD for special requests from the newlyweds.
Creativity: Set the tone of the wedding. For example; Receptions are a big affairs, with lush floral centerpieces, rich glided colors, big gowns, brocade and decadent receptions fit for royalty. Brides are transforming their looks between ceremony and reception, the way they dress to include hair and fashion makeovers.
Sample Stations: From the candy bar to wine and cheese. A wine testing with a professional is fun and educational. Champagne fountains or champagne bars are always a hit.
Bridezilla Increase: Yes, it is on the rise. The know-it all, the nag, the color-blind bride, the wishy-washy bride, the detail demon, the bride with an entourage, the flea market bride. Regardless of their challenges, I love all of them. With patience and understanding their bright side always comes out. We are in the business of LOVE. Pablo
Personal Touches: Name places being used instead of numbers. Some brides incorporate a family recipe into the menu. Personalized wedding favors, lighting, and maybe some room and ingenuity for charity donations. Keep it simple.
Hot Color: Rich chocolate brown continues to rule. Other colors such as yellow are predicted for the end of the year. Therefore you mix and match IAW with the appropiate color combination.
Environmental Consciousness: Non-sustainable fish suffer from diminishing populations due to over-fishing. Fish not to eat: Swordfish and Chilean Sea Bass. Culinary responsibility is "in". Couples are demonstrating their earth-conscious tastes, from e-mail invitations to serving locally grown, free-range fare and donning bio-friendly wedding gowns made of 100 percent silk or cotton.
Cake:The cake should be a focal point at the wedding, the entire table needs to be decorated. Imported white and dark chocolate finishes are "in". Also Irregular heights of tiers and alternating designs and the
painting of floral, geometric and free form shape. Fondue is out.
Venue: Weddings are smaller in size, 60-120 guests. Hotels and restaurants appear to be less desirable than home-style weddings, destination weddings, mansions and outdoor settings.
Floral: Transition of color in the wedding is "hot". The color and theme of a wedding is first seen with the save-the-date card. At the ceremony the colors are different than what was seen in the save-the-date card/invitation. At the cocktail reception the colors are different from the ceremony. At the dinner reception the colors are a combination of all colors previously seen. More than just two colors and no matchy-matchy!

My admiration for art is coercing me to write about Mark Thomas and Tomas Ramos on wedding photography.

Mark Thomas- His true passion is photography. I met Mark and his wife in one of our local wedding shows, though I also saw him working on one of our weddings. ·        Liquor Liability - there is now coverage if bodily injury or property damage were to occur because someone was drinking.

No Dress. You can get repair or replacement cost if the bride's wedding gown or groom's tuxedo is lost or damaged.

What To Expect From A Bridal Show

Most bridal shows are scheduled in the months of January and August. Tickets are usually between $5.00 and $10.00 with a one or two dollar discount if you purchase your tickets online before the event. Prizes may be offered for the first 100, 200 or 500 brides to attend, which usually includes a copy of a major bridal magazine such as “Modern Bride,” a local bridal guide, a pin that says “Bride to Be,” as well as tickets for drawings and sweepstakes.

The most recent bridal show I attended started at 11:00 and ended at 5:00. They had a mini bridal fashion show that started at noon and showcased about 20 wedding gowns from one of the exhibitors. The “Runway Fashion Show” which included more gowns and tuxedos was scheduled for 3:00. The prize drawings were announced at 2pm and 4pm. Having arrived at 11:00, my guests and I had visited all the exhibitors, watched the mini fashion show, and were done by around 12:30. I recommend going to bridal shows later in the day in order to be there for the main events and giveaways. Also, I noticed that there were plenty of free magazines, buttons, and gifts for people arriving after 12:30.

Expect to see a multitude of local photographers at any bridal show you attend. You will be a little overwhelmed by their displays, but spend a little time looking through their photo albums, which contain some of their most personal and unusual candid shots. You will have fun sampling wedding cakes from all the local bakeries. Even better, is seeing new trends in wedding cakes. I saw rich, brown layered cakes with gold leaf accents, and bold, bright colors such as magenta, purple and hot pink.

Unless you want to be bombarded with phone calls and emails from wedding professionals, be careful about the forms you fill out for the exhibitors. My daughter filled out a form for a free cruise giveaway. She was called after the show and asked for her credit card number over the phone. Remember, that even if you “win” something, it may be a $500 discount off of a $2,000 photography package.

Being able to talk to so many wedding professionals in one place is very beneficial. Looking at companies online, who all claim to be the best at what they do, is impersonal and confusing. The exhibitors are friendly and helpful. You will be able to determine for yourself whether you like the taste and look of their cakes, or the design of their flower arrangements. You may not win a prize, but you will come home with a free magazine, some referrals, and some great new ideas for your wedding.

Happy New Year!

It gives me a great pleasure to help young brides and grooms during their planning process. Bridal Shows are one of those occasions to do just that. This last Sunday at the San Antonio Convention Center I just realized that what Bisli has always told me is that "there is nothing better than the business of Love" is very true, just contagious and we enjoy the process very much.

I would like to congratulate some of the vendors that exercised their creativity by bringing some excitement and something new to the show with their art in many forms such as colorful flower centerpiece arrangements ect... On the other hand there are always a handful of followers/imitators new and old vendors alike. It's sad because most of the brides on their planning phase only visit one to two shows, therefore they are limited to compare the workmanship and creativity of the vendors. I notice that some vendors were from the flea market and even HEB was present. I was surprise to see so many venue/hotel booths at a bridal show. And so little of bridal consultants, my regards and best wishes to our hard working colleagues at the show; Tracy French from The French Connection for her nice booth and our friend Mr Goen from Goen South Photography.

should be the same flavor as the wedding cake itself). Have the catering
staff cut the sheet cake in the kitchen, out out of site from the guests

A ground-breaking survey, commissoned by the Wedding & Event Videographers Association International (WEVA), was conducted by Breakthough Marketing, Inc. After reading the results of the survey, brides don't fully appreciate the value of video until after the wedding. Before the wedding, only a little more than half of surveyed brides considered video a "Top 10" service in comparison to other wedding related services . However, after the wedding, that number climbs to 75%.

Brides say video does a better job of capturing the emotions of the day, records the history of the day better, and they strongly fell that future children will enjoy their wedding video more than their wedding photohraphs. Brides need professional service for both. Not surprisingly, newlyweds today say it is more important than ever for brides to have their wedding videos delivered on DVD.
Remember your wedding DVD/video is a family heirloom and needs to be treated as such. I do strongly recommend that future brides hire a professional videographer from the Wedding & Event Videographers Association (WEVA).

Q: Do I have to be a U.S. resident to obtain coverage?
A: Yes, the purchaser must live in the U.S. and be a U.S. resident (Residents of Alaska may not purchase coverage).

Q: Does my wedding have to be in the U.S.?
A: No. You are covered if your ceremony and reception are held in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, a U.S. Territory, or aboard a cruise ship departing a port in one of these locations. For a nominal extra premium, you also may insure ceremonies and receptions held in the United Kingdom, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, or cruises departing one of these locations (except for Cuba or Haiti). Please note, liability coverage is not available in these extended territories. See sample policy for more details.

Q: How old do I have to be to get coverage?
A: The purchaser, bride and groom must be at least 18 years old.

Q: Basically, what does the Wedding Protector Plan^SM cover?
A: The plan can reimburse you if an important item related to your wedding (for example, your ring) is lost or damaged before you get married. The plan can reimburse you in case you lose your deposit if a vendor (for example, your florist) goes out of business before your wedding. You also can receive funds if events beyond your control cause you to postpone your wedding.

The holidays are fast approaching and so is the BIG day for many of you! That’s why this week’s “Words of Wisdom…” have to do with protecting your wedding investment.

What’s the average cost of a wedding today? The answer is a whopping $28,000. Wow! That’s a lot of dinero to spend on a four- or five-hour party. So it’s critical that you safeguard your investment and there’s an easy way to do it.

Every one of us carries an insurance policy in our wallet and guess what it’s called? It’s called a credit card and your credit card can be your greatest financial protection when planning your wedding. Let me give you examples. There was once a bride and groom who booked a florist and gave them a $1500 deposit… in cash. Two weeks before the wedding, the shop went out of business. The couple was totally distraught; they didn’t have money to reserve another florist--but had they used their credit card, their deposit would have been protected. Recently, a bridal salon in our town went out of business. All the brides who gave the shop cash or checks for the deposits paid on their gowns were out of luck. But the ones who used their credit cards had their deposits refunded.

And there are other advantages. Some credit-card companies refund a percentage of your total purchases—in cash or bonuses. Others offer free travel insurance and frequent flier miles. And of course, if you pay the balance due within 30 days, there are no interest charges.

The lesson to be learned is this: No matter how much money you have in the bank, use credit cards to pay for your wedding. Weddings are planned months in advance, and no one knows what’s going to happen down that long, rocky road to the altar. Credit cards offer financial protection, benefits, insurance, and may even save you $$$$.

We are proud to work with the military for approximtely 30 years and counting. We are a military retiree family. I am an Army Airborne Ranger Infantry Retiree. Always approching any event with a sence of urgency and attention to details.

In many ways, the U.S. Military wedding is like any other wedding. The ceremony itself is not a military service but a religious one. What makes it a military wedding is the attire and perhaps some traditions not found in civilian weddings. There is such pomp and circumstance, pageantry and patriotism in these sophisticated rituals.

The Arch of Sabers or Swords is an old tradition, the passage through the Arch symbolizes the welcoming and safe transition into the couples new life together.

For the most part the Arch of Sabers or Swords is similar with each Branch of Service. The Arch is preformed by Uniformed Military personnel, which will normally be your ushers (except the Air Force - please read below). The Arch takes place immediately following the ceremony, when the couple leaves the Chapel. In some instances the Arch can be preformed inside the Chapel, due to bad weather or a request to have two Arch of Sabers. This must be discussed with your Chaplain and approved before the ceremony.

The Arch of Sabers or Swords can be performed by Officers from a near by Military Academy, the National Guard, you or your fiancés peers and your chosen ushers if in the Military Service and Officers. You can check with you or your fiancés Commander to arrange for this service.

Air Force - The Arch of Sabres

The saber bearers cannot perform the function of ushers. The bearers head the processional lines, the chaplain waits at the top of the chancel and the saber bearers proceed until they form two lines directly in front of the chaplain, making sure that they leave enough room for the bride and groom to kneel. Upon reaching their positions, they pivot to face each other and pivot again to face the guests.

As the bride and groom pass each set, the saber bearers automatically face one another, and, as the bridal couple prepares to kneel, all saber bearers turn in unison to face the Bible on the altar.

When the blessing has been completed, all pause as the arch is formed before the couple leaves the chancel.

After passing through the arch, the bride and groom wait for a moment at the head of the chancel steps, and the command is issued to return the saber to the Badric (saber belt) or to carry sabers. The recessional is then commenced.

The Wedding Reception

At the reception, if the groom is in uniform, protocol demands that he proceed the bride in the receiving line.

The national colors and distinguishing flags may be displayed, exactly centered, behind the receiving line, and if the reception room is large, the bridal couple may want an arch included at the reception instead of during the recessional.

Myths & Misconceptions of the Professional Wedding Planner

Medusa, the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, Jennifer Lopez as The Wedding Planner . . . What do these things have in common? They’re all MYTHS!

While being a myth doesn’t keep people from seeking some of these out (well, maybe not Medusa . . . ) they often prevent couples from seeking out the assistance of a professional wedding planner.

To help clarify and debunk some of these, here is a list of some of the more common misconceptions (and truths) of professional wedding planners (PWPs), aka wedding consultants, wedding coordinators, and bridal consultants.

Consultants are expensive and only for the rich and famous. Like most people, much of what you know about a PWP is what you see on TV, the movies, and in magazines. Lavish celebrity weddings raise ratings and sell more copies – but they are not the stuff of everyday real-life weddings. And the people who produce these weddings (Colin Cowie, Preston Bailey . . .) provide a very different service than your local PWP. The local PWP understands what’s in their region -- current trends, and all the great local vendors and resources.

Also, most PWPs offer different levels of service, from basic hour-long sessions to full-service coordination and design, so you should be able to find something in your price range quite easily.

My caterer also does wedding planning. Why not just use them to plan mine? A caterer’s (or florist’s, or dj’s, etc.) main job is to provide the service they are specifically trained and experienced in. While they are busy providing their service on a wedding day, how are they going to take care of any the other behind-the-scenes things? They just can’t be in two places at once.

I’ve just booked my reception venue and they have a list of “preferred vendors.” Why should I pay someone for the same information? Because a PWP doesn’t give the same information. The “preferred vendor” list provided by venues, caterers, etc. are often vendors who have paid to be on that list, and is not an indication of their style, pricing, availability, nor reputation. This very same list is given to all of the venue’s clients.

On the other hand, the list of vendors provided by a PWP is tailored specifically for each bride & groom. You have your own specific style and desires, as well as budget, that you want for your wedding day. Wouldn’t you rather have a list of available vendors that you know specialize in your desired style, and fit your budget?

But I don’t want someone to plan my wedding they way they think it should be. A PWP will take the time to find out exactly what you and your fiancé want out of your wedding, how you envision your wedding day, how much you have and want to spend, and what your priorities are for your wedding. She will also take the time to get to know YOU. By doing so, then she can make referrals and suggestions based on your unique desires and dreams for your wedding day, and NOT some preconceived notion of what a wedding “should” be.

She will help you plan your wedding the way YOU want it to be, not the way she thinks it should be, or (worse yet!) “the way it’s always been done?”

Don’t consultants take ‘kickbacks’ from the vendors they refer? Absolutely not! It is unethical to accept kickbacks, finders fees, or whatever you want to call them. A PWPs main focus is on you, the bride and groom. She is looking out for your best interest, not her own, nor any other vendor’s. The ONLY exception is if the PWP’s fees will be paid by the vendors and not by the client.

Won’t a consultant want to run the whole show? A PWP will work with you, handling as much or as little of your wedding as you want. After all, it is your wedding. The PWP is there to help you and your family make the day perfect. If you want her to, the PWP will run the whole show, but it is your show that she is running.

Our church has a wedding coordinator. Why do I need someone else? The person at the church is usually only familiar with his/her aspect of the wedding -- getting the bride down the aisle on time -- not the complete planning process, and is primarily concerned with making sure the rules of their church are followed. Don’t assume the church coordinator will help with any set-up, assist you and your bridal party while you’re getting dressed, pass out and pin on boutonnieres and corsages, make sure everything and everyone is in place, or be able to fix any behind-the-scenes problems that may arise.

I can find vendors straight out of the yellow pages. Why pay someone to do this for me? You can pick names from the yellow pages yourself. However, this is no indication of their style, price ranges, availability, or if the vendor is even reputable. Referrals provided by a PWP are not pulled out of the yellow pages, but from a data base of pre-qualified, reputable vendors who match a specific set of criteria that fits your wedding vision and budget.

My friend (or sister) just got married, and her wedding was great. Why can’t I use the same vendors? Of course you can use the same vendors, but do you really want to have your wedding just like someone else's?

My mom is helping me. Why hire someone when we can do it all? Using the services of a PWP does not prevent you and/or your mom from “doing it all.” Instead, with her training, experience and expertise, the PWP is on hand to assist and guide you through the entire wedding process, offering suitable suggestions and quickly remedying any problems, so no one ends up too stressed and too tired to enjoy the big day when it finally arrives. Wouldn’t you rather look forward to and enjoy your wedding day than get so stressed out that you can’t wait for it to be over with?

I want to share with you this email that I received today.

AAWP gets lots of email about guests inviting guests. You know the scenario: Invite two people to your wedding and six show up. Some are even so brazen as to put the number of people they’re inviting on the response card, for example:

Number of Guests: __ 6__

AAWP recommends that you never put “Number of Guests” on your response card. In this example, guests simply “check” the appropriate response (no “numbers” allowed):

Recently, we got an idea from one of our AAWP consultants—one that will nip this problem in the bud! In the following example, the bride and groom wrote on the response card (third line):

This is a great idea and leaves no doubt in the guest’s mind about who’s invited and who isn’t. With the average cost of a wedding today close to $28,000, it’s time that we took matters into our own hands. A wedding is not a time to let guests invite guests.

Cohabitaion, Marriage and the Wedding Ceremony

This week’s Words of Wedding Wisdom™ regards cohabitation and begins with a a question: Since 1960, how much has cohabitation BEFORE marriage increased in the U.S.? The answer: A whopping 1,000%.

Today, most couples cohabit, meaning they live together before marriage. According to a recent study by Rutgers University, those who cohabit before marrying risk a much greater chance for divorce when they do marry. And all along, you thought it was the other way around—that you needed to live with your SO, to really get to know one another before the fact, to cut your chances of divorce. Not so.

Years ago, AAWP came across a study by Bumpus and Sweet, noted sociologists, who came up with the same result. Their study said, in effect, that if you live together before marriage, you almost double your chances for divorce. But there is a silver lining to this cloud. If you live together with plans for marriage, in other words, if you are engaged, the studies’ statistics don’t apply.

When it comes to making wedding plans, let us further caution you. The Catholic Church does not approve of cohabitation before marriage and it’s reason enough for a priest to deny your marriage. Other Christian faiths seem to look the other way when it comes to cohabitation and if you’re Jewish, it’s doubtful that your marriage would be denied. But it is a factor you should be made aware of before you meet with clergy. Many engaged couples decide to tell their clergy of their living arrangements, others don’t. The choice is yours.
